Flower Care Answers

How do I unpack my flowers?
Flowers either arrive aqua-packed with a small plastic film reservoir of water or nutrient gel at their base or with their stems open. For best results we recommend that the flowers removed from their packaging and placed into a vase. If your flowers arrive in a posy box or bag, simply lift them out, remove the layer of paper/film/fabric packaging. Hold over a sink and cut off the bottom of the film reservoir. If you want to keep the structure of a bouquet, leave the ties in place or if you want to re-arrange the flowers remove these. You may leave your bouquet in its reservoir, but remember to top up daily with a small amount of lukewarm water and food provided, poured carefully through the middle of the bouquet. If the flower stems have been out of water for some time or arrived with their stems open, trim about an inch from the bottom of each stem before placing in water.

What kind of vase should I place the flowers in?
Place your flowers in a vase large enough to allow the stems to reach at least half way down and fill it three quarters full with lukewarm water, adding the flower food supplied, following the instructions on the sachet. Ensure that your vase is completely clean, using hot water and a light cleaning solution, rinsing thoroughly with hot water as residue from previous displays contains bacteria that block the tiny tubules carrying water up the stems, causing flowers to wilt.

How do I position my flowers?
For best results place flowers in light, cool positions, 18 to 22C (65 to 72F), away from direct sunlight, heating or cooling vents, radiators and other appliances that give off heat. Also keep flowers away from draughts as they can dry the flowers out prematurely. Keep flowers away from ripening fruit as it releases tiny amounts of ethylene gas which makes flowers age faster. For the same reason remove individual flowers as they fade.

How do I look after my flowers on an ongoing basis?
Flowers enjoy being sprayed with a gentle mist of water daily. They also need to be deadheaded regularly to remove fading flowers. Also check the water level in the vase, topping it up with fresh lukewarm water regularly. If the water looks cloudy or has developed an unpleasant smell, it should be thrown away and the vase refilled with fresh lukewarm water. Continue to add flower food to the water because it contains essential nutrients for the flowers and agents that keep bacteria and yeasts away.

What do I do about lily pollen?
The best way to avoid lily pollen coming off the flowers and staining is to remove the stamens when the flowers open.
Note: Lily pollen may stain clothing and furnishings. Use sticky tape to remove it; don't use water or try to brush it off. It can also be harmful to pets if ingested.
